200th Anniversary Celebrations
As part of the bicentenary programme, members and guests were honoured to attend a Civic Reception hosted by the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Councillor Dr Jacqueline McLaren, in the magnificent surroundings of Glasgow City Chambers. Welcoming attendees, the Lord Provost reflected on The Western Club’s distinguished place within the life of Glasgow, noting how the Club’s history has closely mirrored that of the city itself since its founding in 1825.
Responding on behalf of the Club, Chairman Sir Michael Hirst thanked the Lord Provost for her hospitality and observed that both the Club and the city had undergone profound change while remaining true to their essential character and values.
Sir Michael paid tribute to generations of members whose loyalty and stewardship have ensured the Club’s continued success and highlighted recent developments that have strengthened the Club’s long-term sustainability and future prospects.
The evening concluded with a superb performance by the Glasgow University Chapel Choir, adding a fitting finale to a memorable celebration.
Listening to members, shaping the future.
‘The Club is entering an exciting new phase of renewal, with member’s needs and experiences at the heart of the improvements being planned. To support this, the Membership Committee and the Events Committee are launching a programme of member engagement events designed to bring members together, listen to their views and better understand what matters most to them.
The first of these sessions took place on 3 June and generated an amount of valuable discussions and ideas. Further events are planned over the coming months, providing additional opportunities for members to share their thoughts and help shape the future direction of the Club.
Both committees look forward to continuing the conversation and working alongside membersto ensure a strong, vibrant and successful future for The Western Club.’
